About Whale Adventure

The giant of the Ocean - The feeling of snorkelling beside an enormous whale is almost indescribable. When you get eye contact with one, your heart will beat faster than you imagined and euphoria will spread through your body. There are few places in the world where you can experience this unique encounter with one of the ocean’s most incredible giants.

Snorkelling with humpbacks - At sunrise our livebaoard will arrive to our destination, Silver Bank, and with a bit of luck we will be able to see humpbacks breaching the waters in the distance, landing with a great splash. The clear blue, warm water is perfect for snorkelling. The calves come up to the surface to breath every 3-5 minutes.  As they are curious and often swim right up to us, it is crucial that you know where the gigantic mother is as she could show up at any time.

Silver Bank is Approximately 700 km from the shores of the Dominican Republic’s northern coast. The reef was first protected in 1986 and the size of the reserve was increased in 1996. Scientists believe that humpbacks come here to birth their young as the water is warm and shallow, and as there are no fish, predators are not drawn to the area. It is the perfect nursery before the mother and calf begin their journey north. Only 60 persons per week, totalling 500 persons per year, get the opportunity to have this fantastic experience. You can be one of the lucky ones.

Our liveaboard Aggressor ll with crew maintains a very high standard of service and is considered the best for this type of expedition. It is known for its excellent service, clean and comfortable cabins and good food. The crew has several years of experience and is very knowledgeable.

Magnus Lundgren has 20 years of experience guiding expeditions around the world, as well as an educator in underwater photography, giving his expeditions an extra flair. Participants on the exclusive Azores expedition are bound to develop their skills just by listening to him. “My goal has always been to coach participants at their ambition level so that advice and tips can lead to results there and then.”

ABOUT Silver Bank - Dominican Republic - The Atlantic

“I have photographed marine mammals such as sperm whales, humpbacks, fin whales, dolphins and orcas in various places around the world. When asked where I have been, the Silver Banks always comes up as one of the best places to spend time with these ocean giants. Humpbacks are charismatic creatures, and outstanding photographic objects with their beautiful long pectoral fins. They are often very unique individuals, something that is quite exciting for the observer. And to meet a mother and her calf together under the surface is a dream for everyone, including myself.” says expedition leadar Magnus Lundgren.

From Wikipedia

Silver Bank is an area in the Atlantic Ocean north of the Dominican Republic and southeast of the Territory of Turks & Caicos. It covers an area of 1680 km². It is separated from Mouchoir Bank in the west by Silver Bank Passage, and from Navidad Bank in the east by Navidad Bank Passage. It is a shallow underwater area that almost reaches the ocean's surface in most areas (60 feet deep in the shallow parts), but is mostly submerged. In its northern reaches many coral heads reach the ocean surface, especially at low tide. Also, amongst the coral heads is the wrecked freighter Polyxeni, most of which is above the surface. Persons can board the Polyxeni only with governmental permission.

This area is considered a part of the Dominican Republic, as is Navidad Bank east of it. On Oct. 14, 1986, the Dominican Republic established the Silver Bank Sanctuary to protect this area as a safe haven for sea mammals. On July 5, 1996, a Dominican presidential decree enlarged the area and declared it the Sanctuary for Marine Mammals. The Silver Bank has long been a breeding and calving area for humpback whales.
